The mass function and distribution of velocity dispersions for UZC groups of galaxies
نویسندگان
چکیده
We measure the distribution of velocity dispersions of groups of galaxies identified in the UZC catalog; we use the distribution to derive the group mass function. We introduce a new method which makes efficient use of the entire magnitude limited catalog. Our determination of n(≥ σT ) includes a significant contribution from low luminosity systems that would be missing in a volume limited sample. We start from a model for the probability density function of the total number of group members and reproduce the observed distribution. We take several effects like the local fluctuations in volume density, limited sampling and group selection into account. We estimate the relation between total number of members, total luminosity and true velocity dispersion. We can then reproduce not only the observed distribution of σv but also the distributions of the number of group members, the total groups luminosity, and virial mass. The best fit to

Clusters and Groups of Galaxies in the Simulated Local Universe
We compare the properties of galaxy groups extracted from the Update Zwicky Catalogue (UZC) with those of groups extracted from the N -body simulations of the local Universe, in a ΛCDM and a τCDM cosmology. In the simulations the initial conditions of the dark matter density field are set to reproduce the present time distribution of the galaxies within 80h Mpc from the Milky Way. These initial...
متن کاملEvaluation of New MOND Interpolating Function with Rotation Curves of Galaxies
The rotation curves of a sample of 46 low- and high-surface brightness galaxies are considered in the context of Milgrom's modi_ed dynamics (MOND) to test a new interpolating function proposed by Zhao et al. (2010) [1] and compare with the results of simple interpolating function. The predicted rotation curves are calculated from the total baryonic matter based on the B-band surface photometry,...

Allowing the energy of a gravitational field to serve partially as its own source allows gravitating bodies to exhibit stronger fields, as if they were more massive. Depending on degree of compaction of the body, the field could be one to five times larger than the Newtonian field. This is a comfortable range of increase in field strength and may prove to be of convenience in the study of vel...
متن کاملSuper–star Cluster Velocity Dispersions and Virial Masses in the M82 Nuclear Starburst
We use high-resolution near-infrared spectroscopy from Keck Observatory to measure the stellar velocity dispersions of 19 super star clusters (SSCs) in the nuclear starburst of M82. The clusters have ages on the order of 10 Myr, which is many times longer than the crossing times implied by their velocity dispersions and radii. We therefore apply the Virial Theorem to derive the kinematic mass f...
متن کاملThe Role of a Hot Gas Environment on the Evolution of Galaxies
Most spiral galaxies are found in galaxy groups with low velocity dispersions; most E/S0 galaxies are found in galaxy groups with relatively high velocity dispersions. The mass of the hot gas we can observe in the E/S0 groups via their thermal X-ray emission is, on average, as much as the baryonic mass of the galaxies in these groups. By comparison, galaxy clusters have as much or more hot gas ...
